Maine’s Indigenous Truth Commission | First in the USA

In recent decades, the Wabanaki nations of Maine—Penobscot, the Passamaquoddy, the MicMac and the Maliseet—have endured ongoing forced removal of Native children from their families by the Maine child welfare system.

In 2011, members of the Wabanaki nations partnered with non-native employees and Governor Paul LePage to establish a truth commission to investigate and document intergenerational trauma within tribal communities. The Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the first of its type in the United States, marked one year of work in February 2014.
